Failing to nail the floor is a common issue with certain floor fitters. Often they won´t just leave out driving nails into all boards, but nail every other plank. Cutting down on costs and time is the likely reason behind the vicious parctise and more often than not customers can't see any difference, since nails are typically buried out of sight deep inside the boards.
The major shortcoming of failing to nail all planks is wood flooring is not tightly fixed into place, so they will eventually get loose with time, meaning planks end up displaced and start to squeak and give out noises when walked on.
The flip side is putting too many nails, which, believe it or not, lads to cracked tongues and loose floors! This is a major issue that even if predominantly affecting oak floors, tends to bring troubles to all floor types as well. The basic rules of nailing state there should be at least two fasteners per board and that each of them must be 1 to 3 inches away from the board edge. Finally, standards require that fastening space be 8 to 10 inches in the case of trip flooring and 4 inches with plank flooring.
